An Olivier Award-nominated theatre set, it comprised 17 individually flown columns, forming monolithic yet adaptable stone slabs that shifted to create dynamic and immersive stage environments. A Travertine marble effect was meticulously crafted and painted by Richard Nutbourne’s workshops, covering nearly 500 square meters of columns surfaces.
Scott Fleary Productions collaborated closely with the National Theatre’s production team to meet stringent sustainability standards in set design. Every aspect of the set was considered—from the use of recycled materials in scenery fabrication to designing elements for future reuse. The columns’ lightweight timber construction not only contributed to a lower carbon footprint but also allowed for seamless transitions between scenes.
The design evoked the grandeur of a museum exhibition, at times showcasing classical artifacts on plinths before swiftly transforming into more intimate or atmospheric spaces. Traditional scenic carpentry techniques were employed, with the columns built from open-frame timber flats covered with canvas—minimizing material use while ensuring excellent strength-to-weight ratios. Sustainably sourced timber was used throughout, and the Travertine marble effect was achieved with precision-cut and painted foam, resulting in lightweight yet visually monumental set pieces. These flew in and out in various configurations, creating a powerful visual impact.
Modern technology played a key role in the production, with integrated video projections in set design, featuring digital surveillance footage and live camera close-ups. This effectively bridged the play’s ancient themes with contemporary societal issues.
The set’s versatility was further enhanced by curved backing panels, which combined traditional carpentry methods with cutting-edge scenic fabrication techniques. The panels simulated a built-up cityscape using waste wood, reducing the carbon footprint of the scenic elements. A large curved wall, designed to swing open, provided an additional dynamic feature that contributed to the overall impact of the set.
Scott Fleary Productions—one of the UK’s leading theatre set builders—was proud to bring Es Devlin’s visionary stage design to life.
