Scott Fleary Productions were appointed to deliver the scenic construction for STV’s newly redeveloped news studios in Glasgow and Aberdeen, working to a design by Toby Kalitowski. The project represented a significant investment in Scottish broadcast infrastructure, with both studios receiving a complete overhaul of their sets and supporting technology.
The build was managed as a dual-site project, with all modular elements prefabricated and tested in Scott Fleary’s South London workshops before being transported and installed on location by the on-site team. The scope covered risers and LED screen walls, lightbox walls and anchor desks, with bespoke scenic engineering, integrated LED lighting and precision metalwork throughout.
The intimate relationships between LED floor lightboxes, LED wall lightboxes and LED ceiling pieces were engineered down to the millimetre to ensure a continuous and unbroken vista that appear seamless.
Each studio is built around three dynamic video walls, designed to give presenters greater freedom to move around the space and allow reporters and correspondents to join them on set. The result is a more interactive environment that changes how the programme can tell stories on air, both for regular bulletins and larger events such as election coverage.
The new studios form the backdrop for STV News at Six and STV News at Lunchtime, Scotland’s most-watched news programme, which reaches audiences across 13 platforms and delivers up to 50 million views per month across digital channels alone.
